6 Ways To Improve Fuel Economy This Summer
For many East Texas families, summer means more driving than any other time of year. The first step to getting the best gas mileage is to drive a Mazda. We’ll show you what type of fuel efficiency each model offers so you can evaluate Mazda against what you currently drive. Then we’ll offer tips for reducing fuel consumption every time you’re behind the wheel.

Research Mazda Fuel Economy
The U.S. Department of energy says one of the best ways to reduce gas usage is to choose a fuel efficient vehicle. Every Mazda is fuel efficient. Here are the numbers for our 2018 lineup.
- Mazda3 4-Door – 36 EPA estimated highway miles per gallon (MPG).
- Mazda3 5-Door – The hatchback option provides 35 highway miles per gallon.
- Mazda6 – Our stunning sedan provides power and comfort and still averages 35 MPG.
- Mazda CX-3 – Haul people and cargo and save at the same time with an EPA estimated 34 MPG.
- MAZDA CX-5 – Enjoy a roomy crossover SUV that runs on a mere 31 MPG.
- Mazda CX-9 – Transport seven passengers comfortably in our largest SUV for only 28 MPG.
- MX-5 Miata – Sports cars aren’t known for their fuel economy, but this roadster gets 35 MPG.
Reduce Idle Time
You don’t need to warm up your car when you leave for work in the morning. If you’re in the habit of starting your car and letting it idle while you go back in for your coffee and briefcase, you’re wasting gas unnecessarily. Wait until the kids have located their backpacks and you’re ready to go to save fuel.
Fuel Early or Late
Gas is more dense at lower temperatures. Buy your fuel first thing in the morning or after dusk when temperatures are low and get a little more for every penny you spend. It also helps to head to the gas station during the middle of the week. Gas prices are higher at the beginning and the end when people are fueling up for their weekly commute or getting gas for the weekend ahead.
Adjust Driving Habits
If you could take a sneak peek inside the thoughts of almost everyone at our dealership, you’d find as a whole we love nothing better than the thrill of a powerful engine on the open road. Since this is an article on fuel economy, we feel duty bound to tell you fast accelerating and sudden braking also consumes more gas. Staying below the speed limit uses less gas.
If you can’t stand it, we can’t either. Drive a Mazda. They’re already efficient so you don’t have to have all the fun sucked out of driving just to save a little fuel.

Check Your Tire Pressure
Low tire pressure increases resistance. Stop by our service center and we’ll do it for you.
Trade Your Gas Guzzler
Gas prices are climbing, and they’re going to continue to rise through the rest of the summer. That money you put in the tank, you never get back. Invest in a ride that’s better for your wallet, your family and the environment. Get in touch with our staff and we’ll help you explore your options today.

When you test drove your Miata, you probably fell in love with its sporty powertrain as much as you did its stunning good looks. Since its introduction in 1989, MX-5 has dominated racing competitions year after year. Motor Trend says Miata is “the ideal race car for rookie or expert.”
Miata is the most raced car in the world not just because it’s affordable, but because it performs. If you long for a sporty, thrilling driving experience, see why MX-5 is the choice of both racecar drivers and daily commuters around the globe.
Born to Race
When someone pulls up next to you at a stoplight and revs their engine, what do you want to do? If you’re in your MX-5, you’re probably tempted to show off. Spec Miata is the most popular club-racing class. Almost one in six amateur race entries every weekend in the US is a first or second generation Miata. Since the beginning, MX-5 has had the soul, engine and handling of a car designed for racing.
The MX-5 Cup car is a fourth-generation Miata built by Long Road Racing (LRR) in North Carolina. Mazda wants each of them to have the same specs, so it chose LRR as the only Global MX-5 Cup car builder.
Built to Excel
The Global MX-5 Cup car comes off the production line just like the models you can buy at Velocity Mazda, then undergoes over 250 modifications and component changes before it hits the track.
Mazda Motorsports sends LRR MX-5 Sport models with 6-speed manual transmissions coated in Arctic White. The paint choice trims several pounds off models painted Soul Red Metallic.
LRR completely disassembles each car and welds on an FIA, SCCA and NASA approved roll cage. They pull out the seam seals and sound deadening material that add weight and repaint everything a durable industrial gray. Then they reassemble the car with racing components in the engine bay, drive train, suspension, brakes, interior and body.
The factory engine remains stock, but everything from the motor mounts to the digital instrumentation panel gets a racing upgrade. When buyers receive cars they’re track-ready, but no longer legal to drive on the street.

Where to Buy
Anyone can buy a racecar through Mazda Motorsports or Long Road Racing when you visit their website. If you want something with the same sexy styling and powerful performance you can also drive to work, come to Velocity Mazda. Check out our available inventory today.

Sometimes you see a car and it’s love at first sight. You have to have it, and no other car will do. We get that a lot here at Velocity Mazda.
Other times you have a basic idea what you want, but you need specific features. You do a lot of research to figure out which vehicle is going to be the best fit for your needs and your budget. We get a lot of that too.
When East Texas buyers look at Mazda, every model has looks, extensive safety features and an incredible driving experience. We’re happy to show you different models in person and explain the features of each. Here’s a quick guide for getting started.
Step 1 — Evaluate Your Needs
The single Tyler college student shopping for his first car has different requirements from the business professional with three children who also drives carpool. Ask yourself these questions to start narrowing down your hunt for your perfect ride.
- How many passengers do you typically transport? Small cars may advertise they can fit three in the back seat, but the center spot can be uncomfortable if your passengers have long limbs. However, if you’re at a stage in life when a two seater makes sense, you may want a Miata.
- What kind of cargo space do you need? Think through a typical week. Do you transport groceries, sports equipment, pets or other bulky items?
- What’s important to you about driving? Some people just want plenty of room to accommodate passengers and gear alongside reliable performance. To others, the driving experience is critical. The good news is, every Mazda model provides intuitive handling and a powerful connection with the road.
- What’s your budget? Most people don’t have a stack of hundreds to take to the dealership, they need a car that fits in their budget. Our payment calculator can help you get started.
Step 2 — Compare Models Side by Side
Here’s a breakdown of what’s available on our lot right now.

Mazda3 – This 4-door is a fuel-efficient compact, that gets an estimated 36 highway miles per gallon. Its 2.5 liter SKYACTIV-G 4-cylinder engine sips gas when you’re cruising around Loop 323 and provides plenty of horsepower on the open road. We also currently have a 5-door sport in Eternal Blue Mica that won’t last long.
Mazda6 – We wrote extensively about this one in our article Meet Turbocharged Precision in the New Mazda6.

Mazda CX-3 – If you need the passenger and cargo space of an SUV, but you want the feel of a sports car, check out this compact crossover. I-ACTIV AWD all-wheel-drive keeps riders safe when East Texas weather changes in an instant and Kodo design makes every inch striking and well-balanced.

Mazda CX-5 – This is one of Velocity Mazda’s top sellers. Almost every review you read seems amazed that a car so affordable could offer the looks, performance and driving experience this model provides. The leather-wrapped steering exudes luxury and standard cylinder deactivation provides extreme fuel efficiency. Car and Driver calls it, “the best-looking and best-driving compact crossover.”

Mazda CX-9 – This is the largest Mazda SUV with room for up to seven people to sit comfortably. The MAZDA CONNECT Infotainment system keeps riders entertained and provides sporty handling, strong acceleration and competitive fuel economy.

MX-5 Miata – There’s nothing like the exhilaration of driving this sporty two-door. Responsive steering makes you one with the road for a supremely satisfying driving experience. The 2018 is even lighter than previous generations, with a number of enhancements that ensure MX-5 will continue to be the best-selling roadster of all time.
Step 3 — Take This Quiz
Still not sure which Mazda is just right for you? Sometimes it’s not about the number of seats or miles per gallon, it’s about who you are inside. Mazda USA created this quiz to help find your vehicle soulmate.
Step 4 — Contact East Texas Car Experts
Research is a good starting point, but there’s no substitute for seeing cars in person. You need to sit in the seats and experience the driving experience for yourself. At Velocity Mazda, we don’t pressure people into making a vehicle purchase that isn’t right for them. We’re more interested in helping you find the right fit for your family and your budget. Stop by and see us or get in touch today.

Mazda’s Road to Indy
Have you ever wondered how race car drivers learn to do what they do? At Velocity Mazda, racing is in our blood, which is part of the reason we love the cars we sell. Mazda supports racing at every level, but not everyone in East Texas knows about their driver training program. The Mazda Road to Indy is like college for race car drivers. It attracts competitors and aspiring drivers from around the world for extensive scholarship-funded driver development.
About the Mazda Road to Indy
At the end of 2010, Mazda became the title sponsor of a program aimed at helping drivers develop their skills and prepare for life as a racing professional. The program is based on a ladder system that involves millions of dollars in scholarship money. In the past four years, 16 drivers have gone from the Mazda program to participate in the IndyCar series.
Last year participants received more than $3.5 million in scholarships and awards. Each series champion received a scholarship that allowed them to go to the next step on the ladder.
The Ladder System
Drivers start the Mazda Road to Indy with the Cooper Tires USF2000 Series Powered by Mazda. The American series uses a variation of the Formula Ford F2000. The objective is to give drivers open-wheel training as they work toward an IndyCar career.
Next, drivers progress to the Pro Mazda Championship, the same series that has offered training to drivers like Marco Andretti and Tristan Vautier. The 2017 champion Victor Franzoni won scholarships valued at $790,300.
The final run on the Road to Indy ladder is Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires. Indy Lights is a developmental open-wheeled racing series and the highest step on Mazda’s Road to Indy.
Drivers learn much more than just how to hone their competitive driving skills. The program teaches participants how to communicate with the press, focusing on the big picture and identifying ways to stand out as a driver. Coaches take young adults straight out of karting or participation in a school series and teach them what they know each step of the way.
According to Ed Jones Mazda’s Road to Indy, “prepares you exactly for what you need.” James Hinchcliffe says, “No one arrives at the top…the Road to Indy helps you get there.”
This year at least five of the previous seven IndyLights champions will participate in IndyCar 2018. Watch for Kyle Kaiser, Ed Jones, Spencer Pigot, Gabby Chaves and Josef Newgarden. Request more info on the driver training program at pr@roadtoindy.net.
If you want to stick with your day job and still experience a vehicle that handles like a race car, stop by Velocity Mazda. Check out our online inventory or get in touch today.

7 Ways Mazda Technology Keeps Drivers Safe
Tyler is a wonderful place to live, but driving here can be a challenge. With a large college and high school population, a lot of the drivers are just inexperienced. Add to that professionals in a hurry, unsafe drivers on their cell phones and all the other complications that come with heavy traffic, and there’s an increased risk of a car accident. How safe will your family be if you experience a wreck? At Velocity Mazda we hope it never happens, but we’re proud of the superior safety features that come with every vehicle we sell.
Mazda was named 2018 Best Car Brand by U.S. News and World Report for its driving dynamics, comfortable interior seating, technology designed for the user and attractive design. It looks amazing and handles like a dream, but even more importantly, every model offered is an IIHS+ Top Safety Pick. Here are a few of the ways our cars will keep you safe.
Active Safety Technology
The best way to stay safe on the road is to keep accidents from happening. Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE is a collection of technologies that help drivers spot danger well in advance and avoid impending collisions. Each operates with watchmaker precision that always has your safety in mind. These are just a few of our safety features:
- Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) – When you drive at night, this system turns your low beams as you steer, so the light shines in the direction you’re turning.
- High-Beam Control (HBC) – At night your car automatically switches on your brights so you can see what’s ahead. It also dims them when it senses an approaching car or you get near taillights. Click to see a video demonstration.
- Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) – If you start to drift from your lane, an alarm will alert you so you can make a correction and avoid the possibility of impact.
- Acceleration Control – If you step on the gas by mistake and there’s an obstacle in front of you, your car sends an alert and stops you from taking off.
When Accidents Happen
Sometimes accidents happen no matter how safely you drive or what technology comes with your vehicle. These technologies protect you and your passengers when the worst happens.
- SKYACTIV-Body – It’s lightweight for driving enjoyment and superior handling, but your Mazda’s body is also extremely strong. The front end has a multi-load path design to disperse collision shock and high-tensile steel around critical cabin areas. The doors contain side impact bars, the underbody has a strengthened frame and the fuel tank is designed for safety in case of impact.
- Front seats – The most common auto injuries involve the head and neck. Our seat structure is designed to reduce shock and prevent damage.
- ISOFIX Child Seat Anchors – Protect your tiny passengers with this attachment point that makes it easy to tether your safety seat.
Mazda has too many safety features to list in one article, but we’d be glad to show them to you in person. At Velocity Mazda, we don’t just sell cars. We live in East Texas and we care about our community. Stop by to find out more about how our cars keep families safe.

Meet Turbocharged Precision in the New Mazda 6
Passion. Fluidity. Elegant synchronization. The new Mazda 6 takes craftsmanship to a whole new level with a rich, luxurious interior and soul of motion exterior lines that will speak to your soul. After a long wait, Velocity Mazda is ready to reveal the 2018 model to East Texas. Find out what you can expect to see and what precision engineering means for this captivating new sedan.

Watchmaker Precision
We compare Mazda’s precision engineering to the old-world craftsmanship and attention for detail you would expect from a watchmaker. You’ll often find a master watchmaker hunched over their work surface busily polishing, fitting, and checking all the hundreds of tiny pieces that make a mechanical timepiece.
Watchmakers synchronize the movement of every pin, gear, spring and lever. If one component is even slightly off, the timepiece is worthless. The process can take years. It involves a lengthy design process, ordering or crafting each component, planning for both movement and makeup, assembly, springing and timing, dial fitting, casing and final inspection. The Mazda 6 went through a similar process, and the results are just as breathtaking.
Mazda’s Precise Movements
Intricate watch mechanisms create extreme precision. Mazda 6 designers reevaluated and polished every detail. Here’s what you can expect:
- The Mazda 6 Sport model’s automatic transmission has Sport Mode for agile shifting and impressively responsive driving.
- The SKYACTIV-G 2.5 engine has added refinement in 2018. Enjoy 187 horsepower and 186 ft-lb of torque.
- Cylinder-deactivation technology keeps you from burning fuel when you don’t need to. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 and 2018 Mazda 6 are the only cars in North America with this technology available in a four-cylinder engine.
- Multiple upgrades make Mazda 6 smooth and quiet. There’s no vibration when you switch from two to four cylinders, and the interior is re-engineered for a quiet, comfortable ride.

Manufacturers examined every component with the same demanding standards you’d expect from a master watchmaker.
Precision Increases Life
Handmade watches become heirlooms because when every part works perfectly, there’s no wear and tear. All Mazdas are known for their reliability. The design precision of Mazda 6 means each piece has been carefully fitted and subjected to rigorous testing. There’s less wear, so you can plan to keep your car until it becomes a classic.

An Elevated Experience
Like a precision timepiece, the new Mazda 6 is far from ordinary. Luxury comes standard with push-button start, the MAZDA CONNECT infotainment system, LED head and tail lights and safety features like blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. It wraps you in elegance with rich Nappa leather and gleaming wood accents.

The new Mazda 6 has too many upgrades to list and it’s too gorgeous for a photo to do it justice. Contact us to find out more about what makes this new sedan a must-see this April at Velocity Mazda.

Is an Extended Warranty Worth the Cost?
Buying a car is expensive. When it’s a new car, most people hope it won’t have any mechanical issues in the near future, and when you’re buying a Mazda, that’s typically true. However, once the factory warranty expires on any new car, the cost of repairs can put a strain on your budget. Some buyers are good at saving and know Mazda’s reputation for reliability, so an extended warranty may not be the best option. For other families, buying an extended warranty provides peace of mind that’s worth every penny. Here are some tips for evaluating what’s right for you.
Know Reliability and Durability
Some of the people reading this article may not be shopping for a Mazda. Consumers are keeping cars longer, and East Texans drive a lot. No matter what you’re buying, before you price an extended car warranty, research statistics for the make and model you’re considering. Even if they’re still covered under the original factory warranty, some may only cover certain parts under specific conditions.
If you’re buying a used car where you don’t know its history, or if that vehicle type is prone to needing certain types of repairs, you probably need an extended warranty to cover costly maintenance and expensive technology.
What Mazda’s Basic Warranty Covers
New Mazdas come with a three year, 36,000 mile warranty that covers both materials and workmanship for every original part of the car. They also have a five year, 60,000 mile warranty for the powertrain, so your engine, transmission, front end and rear drive systems are covered as long as you have your vehicle serviced at an authorized dealership.
Research What Repairs Cost
Most people are still paying their car note when their factory warranty expires. An extended warranty helps owners know they will have time to completely pay off their vehicle before there’s a possibility of needed repairs. Here are some of the most common issues and what fixing them costs.
- Clutch replacement typically costs between $465 and $1,994.
- Replacing a head gasket might run anywhere from $691 to $3,263.
- Front strut or shock absorber replacement can cost anywhere from $105 to $836.
Be Honest About Your Budget
Buying an extended warranty is really about financial planning. To decide if you need one, ask yourself how your money typically flows. Does your monthly budget leave plenty of room if you need one of the most common repairs? Are you comfortable with spending what’s in your savings account to keep your vehicle in good shape? Many vehicle buyers aren’t.
An extended warranty comes with an affordable payment plan, so you avoid unpleasant surprises. You choose from hundreds of approved repair facilities, so if you travel or move outside of East Texas you’re still covered. For most vehicles, there are different levels of plans, so you can choose the coverage that best fits your needs.
Whether you’re buying a new Mazda or a quality pre-owned vehicle, at Velocity Mazda we’ll help you evaluate your options. Stop by or get in touch to find out more.

Ultimate East Texas Car Buying Guide Part 2
In part one of this series we told you how to prepare for a successful car buying experience. Now we’re ready to get down to the nitty gritty. As an East Texas car buyer, when you’re ready to move toward your next vehicle purchase, it’s time to head to Velocity Mazda to actually see and test drive that vehicle you’ve been dreaming about. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and while we can’t say what other dealerships do, we can offer insight into how to get the best value at ours.
How Much Should You Tell The Salesman?
There’s a public perception that car dealerships are shady, and some of them are. If you search for getting the best car price, some of the online information will tell you the salesman is out to get you, so you need to act like you’re not really interested in buying a car and hide information about your trade.
The truth is, we are always up front about the car price and our special offers. We post them online, so they don’t change depending on how interested a customer seems to be. We feel privileged to be a part of the East Texas community, and selling quality cars for a fair price is just part of the way we make a difference.
If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, we’ll help you find it. If you do know, let your representative know the following:
- Your time frame for making a purchase – Whether you need a car today or you’re looking to buy six months from now, we can help you reach your goals.
- What trim and options you’re interested in – If keyless entry and a sun roof are deal breakers, we’ll only show you models that meet your specifications.
- What you’re prepared to pay – Whether you’re thinking in terms of monthly payment or overall vehicle price, over or under-representing your expectations just slows things down.
What About Your Trade?
Sometimes we talk to people who are afraid if they come in with a trade, it will reduce their ability to get a fair price. They wait until it’s time to sign the paperwork, then they bring it up and the process has to start over. If that’s a concern, one tactic is to be up-front about your trade but tell your representative you want to negotiate the price of your new car separately from your trade-in value.
Ask About Incentives
Mazda USA’s website has special offers and incentives by location, so you can always see what’s currently available. Right now they have special offers for owner loyalty, military appreciation and more. Sometimes our dealership offers specials for students, AAA members etc.
When To Say Yes
Avoid buyer’s remorse by doing your research ahead of time. Know what your trade is worth and the true market value of the vehicle you’re buying. Check financing options so you know you’re getting the lowest interest rate available for your credit. Then, choose a car you love.
If the vehicle you buy brings you joy, if driving feels like a little slice of heaven, you know you’ve made the right choice. At Velocity Mazda, we can help you find that car and feel good about saying yes. Contact us to find out about current specials or stop by and see us today.

Ultimate East Texas Car Buying Guide Part 1
Buying a new car can be nerve-wracking. It’s a business transaction, but it involves your public image, your family’s safety and your financial comfort. Don’t just Google car dealership near me. First, there are some things you can do to lay the foundation for a smooth sale. Get your trade ready, gather information and form reasonable expectations so you go in with the tools you need to get a great deal. In this two part series we’ll tell you all that, plus insight from Velocity Mazda’s Camden Jones on what makes our dealership so unique.
Start Getting the Best Car Price Online
We always want you to stop by the dealership, but one way to do your homework ahead of time is to shop online. For some people, once they go to the dealership things start to get emotional.
At Velocity Mazda, we don’t blame you. It’s hard to look at all those gleaming Mazdas and not fall hard and fast. Once you see the interior and experience that new car smell, once you sit down inside and find yourself wrapped in intuitive luxury, you’re a goner.
Knowledge is power. Velocity Mazda posts both our new and used inventory online so you can see exactly what’s on the lot. We include dozens of photos so you can see each car from every angle. Our dealership posts the Velocity Sales Price along with any special offers.
We also offer tools for valuing your trade, getting pre-approved for financing and calculating your payment. Even if you’re not ready to buy, take a minute to check out what we have on the lot right now. Then you’ll be ready to come see it in person.
Ask Car Buying Questions
If you still aren’t sure what you want or you don’t have time to stop by, email a dealership representative to ask your questions. This accomplishes a number of things. First, you stay in charge of the conversation. Find out what interest rates are available and any models that might have just arrived.
You also start getting to know a representative, and that relationship will help you when it becomes time to close the deal. We understand car salesmen in the past have used high pressure tactics and sometimes even deception. That’s not what we’re about, and we’re willing to work extra hard to prove it.
Know the Car Dealership Lingo
Car prices are referred to in a couple of different ways.
- Sticker price – MSRP means the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Dealers would love you to pay that amount, but they typically have some flexibility. It’s the one posted on the car and in advertisements.
- Invoice price – This is about what the dealership paid for the vehicle. They have additional costs, so usually there’s no way they can sell it for this price.
- True market value – The car is really worth this amount in Tyler, Texas. This is what you need to know. It’s usually somewhere between MSRP and invoice price.
Research Your Best Vehicle Options
If you have a trade, use tools like Kelley Blue Book to get a realistic idea of trade-in value. Research interest rates. Once you’ve looked at Velocity Mazda’s financing options online and talked to a representative, you might also see what your bank or credit union offers to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
Next week we’ll post part two of this series, where we give you tips on actually closing the deal, but you don’t have to wait. Start the conversation today when you contact Velocity Mazda for a trade evaluation and no-hassle information on current inventory.

Geneva 2018 – A Quick Recap
This time of year, Velocity Mazda knows almost everyone in East Texas is ready for a getaway, and Mazda’s newest vehicles are the perfect escape. At the 2017 LA Auto show Mazda’s sleek, powerful sedan took center stage, and it just did so again at this month’s Geneva International Motor Show, a top five global event. The auto maker showcased concept cars the Mazda Vision Coupe and the Kai Concept, alongside the 2018 Mazda6 Wagon and Sedan. In case you missed it, here’s the roundup.
The Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year

In Japanese, Kodo means soul of motion. The Mazda Vision Coupe combines the serene flow of wind and water with the restless vitality of a predator about to spring or a sword poised to strike. Drivers see Kodo in the play of light across the Vision Coupe’s surfaces and its upgraded SkyActiv powertrain performance.
This stunning four-door has such fluid lines you almost can’t stop running your eyes back and forth. It wore a gleaming metallic finish to the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of 2017. Earlier this year it was named “Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year” at the 33rd Festival Automobile International in France. Mazda RX-Vision won the same honors at the previous year’s event.
The Pioneer

Kai means Pioneer, and the Kai Concept showcases Mazda’s quantum leaps in technology with SkyActiv Vehicle Architecture, revolutionizing the connection between car and driver. SkyActiv-X uses Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) to combine spark-ignited gasoline benefits with the high efficiency of a diesel compression engine. We’ll bring you more on that in the very near future.
Subtle Sophistication

Mazda6 is one of the nation’s favorite midsized sedans, and it just got even better. The exterior features a new mesh grill and fresh chrome details, along with a complete interior overhaul.
The soul of motion concept sings throughout with a streamlined dashboard, new seats and technology so intuitive it feels like it’s reading your mind. Mazda6 is estimated to hit the road in Spring 2018, and at Velocity Mazda we’ll let you know as soon as it’s available. Many Geneva visitors wondered whether the North American model power will eventually become available for the European-spec Mazda6 Tourer.
Mazda in East Texas
